'Please don't hate me.' the thought ran through the girl's mind, as her father stared at her with hatred in his cold eyes. Alexz waited for the tears to come, but for some strange reason, they didn't. She stood still, as her father finally spoke. "You're a worthless piece of nuts aren't you?" 'I'm sorry.' the thought ran through the thirteen year olds head, although she didn't speak it. "Just get to school, I want you out of my site." she knew her father meant it, so she just nodded and grabbed her book bag.
She dared a glance at her step-mother whose eyes showed the same hatred as her father's. She then looked at her step sister, whose expression was the same bored expression she always used to look at her. No one cared about her, and she knew it. The young girl bowed her head, her blonde hair falling into her hazel eyes. She walked out the door, and noticed her skate board in the middle of the lawn. Shannon must have been trying to use it. She walked over, and let out a small moan. It was scratched up, really badly, and she had no money left to buy a new one. She had used it up on the newest Temptation album.
Then, she remember she had bought the album, so she pulled out her I-pod, and turned on a song she loved. The music engulfed her, taking over any of her thoughts she had been thinking. She grabbed her newly scratched skateboard, and sang along as she skated to her middle school. She laughed at her favorite part, trying to match the lead singer, Pete's screaming voice. She wasn't very good at it. If only Kiwi was there to match the voice. She picked up her skateboard, and stepped to her locker.
She opened it, her mirror, posted of Temptation, pictures of her and Kiwi and Michelle, and also a few pictures of them and Alan. Alan was their best guy friend, there was no denying it. In the mirror, she saw the back of Skyler's head. Skyler, the most popular boy in school, and the object of Alexz's affection for quite awhile. Although he barely knew she existed. He turned around, and smiled and nodded at her. She felt her heart leap as he walked away, and grabbed her stuff, closed her locker, and quickly set down the hall looking for her best friends.
She found the three of them in front of the bulletin board, staring. She could have started laughing, as the two females mouthes were slightly agape. Kiwi was the first to notice her arrival, speaking quietly. "Hey Al, what's up?" her eyes never once left the bulletin board. "Nothing much here, but I'm not so sure about you guys..." she answered the question, while adding one of her own. It was Alan who spoke this time. "Look, read, then speak." his voice was a command, not even a suggestion.
Alexz obeyed, following his sight line. She saw a flyer, and realized that was what they were all staring at. With good reason too, she decided as she read the first line.
Battle of the Bands, featuring guest judge TEMPTATION.
"Oh my God!" she shrieked happily. "Keep reading." was Michelle's hushed reply. Alexz obeyed again, reading the rest of the flyer. Winner will receive a contract with Temptations own record label, Temptation Records. Not only that, but the winner will also make a song with the famous rock band.
Alexz was close to hyperventilating, but kept her voice calm. "We gonna enter?" Michelle spoke up again. "Of course! I am not giving up the chance to meet the hottest guy in the world, aka SETH JORDAN. " Kiwi and Alan couldn't help laughing, but Alexz felt she had to say something. " I thought the hottest guy on the planet was your cousin Austin?" Michelle turned to look at her quickly, "He doesn't count anymore. He got married, remember when we left for a week to go to Utah? There was a reason." She smiled, and heard the first bell ring. She quickly grabbed a pen from Alan, and wrote Midnight Tears on the sign up sheet.
That night, they all met up at Kiwi's house. It was time to practice. Alan was usually around to watch, as he was their number one fan. But tonight he had a date, and although they would usually be watching him to make sure he didn't die. He might, it was a possibility, of course. Okay, no it wasn't but they always liked to tease him about it. But that night, they were going to practice. They practiced every Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. And tonight she had to introduce a new song to the band, to play at the battle of the bands.
That night, she taught the lyrics to the band, and they were all gushing. "Oh my God, we are so gonna win!" Kiwi was jumping up and down, strumming a few chords on her bass. Michelle was a little calmer then that, but not much. "I'm going to meet Seth Jordan, I'm going to meet Seth Jordan." Alexz smiled that they liked her lyrics, but wasn't sure they were quite ready. "Chorus, one more time guys. Michelle, keep your beats steady. Snare can be hard in a song this slow. Kiwi, you're doing okay. Keep practicing. And I need to work getting it memorized."
Kiwi and Michelle rolled there eyes in unison, and frowned. "We have it down man. The words are simple. Repeat after me. The darkness engulfs my soul, pushing away the things I once loved. All the things that made me happy, fly away like a pure white dove." Michelle was being sarcastic, but telling the truth at the same time. "Fine, let's leave it for tonight at least. Would you guys mind an extra practice last night?" she asked, knowing the answer almost instantly.
"Why yes, I do mind. I'm going shopping tomorrow." Michelle supplied almost instantly. "And I'm going out with Nick thank you very much." Kiwi added. Nick was Kiwi's on-again off-again boyfriend, and he was an awesome guy. She loved him like a brother, and Michelle did too. But recently, he had been acting strangely, and she was glad he was going out with Kiwi again the next night.
"Fine, but remember to practice on your own. Are we doing Dove?" she answered and supplied a question of her own again. She sighed when the nodded, to busy looking at pictures of Seth Jordan to speak. "Guys, leave it. " she muttered as she picked up her own bag and skateboard. She rolled her eyes as they waved, but didn't speak. Great, she hoped the could concentrate on the music when the real live Seth Jordan was in front of them. Wait, she hoped she could concentrate on the music, when the real live Pete Hall was in front of her.
When she got home, she went straight to her room, but instead of working on her homework, she pulled out her guitar. She knew her parents would get mad if they heard it, so she just practiced some notes without her amp. Her parents noticed soon however, and were knocking on her door. She sighed as she put her guitar down, and unlocked the door. "Shut the hell up, no one else wants to here your suckish guitar skills." It was her sister, surprise surprise. "Sorry." she muttered, closing the door, she worked on her homework and fell asleep.
The next day, she left without talking to any of her family members, as she didn't want to loose her good mood. She grabbed her still ailing skateboard, and rode it to Michelle's house down the street. The good thing about her home, was that it was close to her friend's houses as well. Michelle was waiting for her today, as after the school day, she had decided to attend the mall with her. Kiwi would have come as well, but she still had the date with Nick, and wanted to primp for it.
At lunch, they sat down at their usual table. Also sitting around them were Alan, Nick, and a girl named Haley. Alexz looked longingly over at the table where Skyler sat with the other popular kids, until Kiwi knocked her on the head. "Yo, stop daydreaming about the prep, and let's start thinking about the Battle of the Bands. It's tomorrow remember?" she nodded, turning back to her own table and poking at what was supposed to be spaghetti and meatballs, but looked more like worms. "Okay sick. This food is disgusting." The rest of her table nodded, and she got up to grab a pop from the cooler that was set out by kids, since pop was against the rules during school hours, but the teachers seemed to overlook the fact, since they wouldn't get in trouble for the kids sneaking pop to each other.
She sighed as she sat back down, the pop fizzing as she opened it. "I seriously hope we win." she told her lunch time crowd, and they all nodded, and Michelle added, "Yea, Seth Jordan..." Alexz laughed with everyone else this time, although she did add, "Okay, we get it. You're in love with Seth Jordan." and everyone laughed again.
As she was rushed to class by the lunch ladies, who obviously wanted to eat the left-overs today as they weren't letting anyone who wanted to skip hang out there. She walked into the biology class room, the rest of the sophomore's in the room acting like total idiots. But then again, she hadn't expected much else from the losers she called her friends. Not that a lot of them were, most of them weren't actually but still. She took a seat in an empty desk, and looked up as Skyler entered the room. There were scattered empty seats all over the room for him to sit, as apparently most of the girls had been saving at least one spot near them.
Alexz watched and waited as he stepped into the overly loud classroom, the teacher hopelessly trying to get them to settle down. And then suddenly he was sitting in the chair next to her, smiling. Skyler that is, not the teacher.
She dared a glance at her step-mother whose eyes showed the same hatred as her father's. She then looked at her step sister, whose expression was the same bored expression she always used to look at her. No one cared about her, and she knew it.
